◆ Costliest electricity in the lower 48

Heating Cost in California

Mild winters would suit a heat pump, but California's electricity is more than 80% above the US average of 18.44¢/kWh, which flips the arithmetic back toward gas.

◆ Mild winters, occasional hard freezes

Heating Cost in Texas

A 47.9°F average winter keeps a heat pump running at high efficiency, so it has the lowest delivered-heat cost here — but sizing for the rare hard freeze still matters.

◆ Warmest winters in the country

Heating Cost in Florida

Gas Rate (est.)

A 59.4°F average winter means very little heating demand at all, and a heat pump runs at its best seasonal COP when it is called on.
