How much a tankless heater saves depends almost entirely on how much hot water you use, because what it removes is standby loss β€” the heat a storage tank sheds to the room around the clock whether you draw any water or not. DOE puts the saving at 24–34% for homes using 41 gallons a day or less, falling to 8–14% for homes using around 86 gallons a day. In cash terms, at the medium draw of 55 gallons a day the gas figures work out at about $21/month for a tank against about $16/month for a non-condensing tankless β€” roughly $60 a year.

A saving of a few dollars a month takes a long time to repay a tankless unit’s higher purchase and installation cost, so the energy bill is rarely the deciding argument. Lifespan usually is: storage tanks last about 10–15 years, while gas tankless units commonly run 20 years or more with descaling and routine service. If you are staying in the house long enough to replace a tank twice, that changes the arithmetic more than the monthly saving does. So does never running out of hot water.

Electric tankless is a different proposition again. Heating 3 gallons a minute through a 67Β°F rise takes about 29 kW β€” roughly 120 amps at 240V, which is most of a typical residential service on its own. That is why whole-house electric tankless usually means new circuits and often a panel or service upgrade, and why the running-cost saving against an electric tank is negligible: an electric tank already rates UEF 0.90–0.95, so there is barely any standby loss left to remove. Electric tankless earns its place at the point of use β€” a remote bathroom or a workshop sink β€” not as a whole-house replacement.
